If you thought that the iPhone 5 won’t be a hit as it looked like a longer and thinner version of the iPhone 4S then you will be surprised by these numbers.
A new report from Strategy Analytics says that Apple’s iPhone 5 was the best selling smartphone in Q4 2012. It has comfortably overtaken Samsung’s Galaxy S3, which hadunseated iPhone 4S in Q2 2012 to take the best selling smartphone crown.
In fact, according to the report, Apple shipped more iPhone 4S units than the Galaxy S3.
Apple shipped a whopping 27.4 million iPhone 5 units in Q4 2012, grabbing 12.6% of the market share. Apple also shipped 17.4 million iPhone 4S units (8% market share), where as Samsung shipped 15.4 million units of Galaxy S3 (7.1% market share) globally in the fourth quarter.
A rich touchscreen design, extensive distribution across dozens of countries, and generous operator subsidies have been among the main causes of the iPhone 5’s success. In addition to the iPhone 5, Apple shipped an estimated 17.4 million iPhone 4S units for 8 percent smartphone share globally in Q4 2012. Apple’s iPhone 5 and iPhone 4S are currently the world’s two most popular smartphone models.
Samsung is widely expected to launch Galaxy S4, the next generation Galaxy S smartphone on March 14, so I won’t be surprised if it becomes the best-selling smartphone in Q2 2013 or Q3 2013, unless Apple surprises us by launching the next generation iPhone this summer.
I’m not surprised with the success of the iPhone 5, but it’s quite remarkable to see that Apple has managed to sell more units of the iPhone 4S, which was introduced in 2011.
